American officials believe the attack was planned, but Chris Stevens had been back in the country only a short while and the details of his visit to Benghazi, where he and his staff died, were meant to be confidential.
Some of the missing papers from the consulate are said to list names of Libyans who are working with Americans, putting them potentially at risk from extremist groups, while some of the other documents are said to relate to oil contracts.
According to senior diplomatic sources, the US State Department had credible information 48 hours before mobs charged the consulate in Benghazi, and the embassy in Cairo, that American missions may be targeted, but no warnings were given for diplomats to go on high alert and "lockdown", under which movement is severely restricted.

Re: America 'was warned of embassy attack but did nothing'
His “visit” to Benghazi? The bastard lived there, because Gaddafy loyalists burned down the US embassy in Tripoli, and because Benghazi is the main center of pro-NATO terrorists. Most U.S. personnel live in Benghazi.
“Extremist groups”? They are Gaddafy loyalists. (I use the term “Gaddafy loyalist” for any Libyan who is enraged that NATO and its terrorists ruined his life. An individual’s personal feelings about Gaddafy himself are irrelevant.)
“Credible information”? Perhaps you mean the countless attacks by Gaddafi loyalists that have been going on now for a year?
Yes, NATO and its terrorists underestimated the Green Resistance. Libya will now have a civil war as NATO and its terrorists go on fresh rampages.
NATO thought that after it had impoverished the people of Libya, the victims would eagerly take any job they could get protecting the theft operations of foreign corporations. NATO was wrong. Now US Marines will protect the corporate theft.
The rest of the article is standard media bullshit.
