Iraq toll touches 400 in three days

ALMOST 400 people have been killed in Iraq over the past three days, as insurgents and sectarian militias defied a massive US security crackdown billed as a last chance to restore order to Baghdad.

132 Iraqis killed in wave of bombings

"The flesh of one man's face was stripped to his skull," said Ahmed Laith, who sells nylon tracksuits from a booth in the center of Shalal market.

"These were just people shopping; what did these women and children do to deserve to be killed?"

"I saw a man from a family I know carrying his son's burned and charred body," Ahmed Mahmoud, 36, said. "He was screaming like a madman."

'I saw heads separated from the bodies'

"It is impossible to tell the exact number of dead because we are basically counting body parts," said a health ministry official in Baghdad, who asked not to be named.
