NEW YORK: The Pulitzer Prize for general nonfiction
was awarded Monday to journalist Lawrence Wright ,
for 'The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11' ,
for delving deep down into the roots of Islamic fundamentalism.
For five years Wright, who is a staff writer for the “New Yorker”, painstakingly sifted through material for his book by traveling to the Middle East, Europe and around the United States interviewing hundreds of people, and collecting documents and previously recorded interviews with major players involved in the September
2001 terror attacks on the US.
What has emerged from Wright’s effort is a deep, penetrating analysis of how Islamic fundamentalism has reshaped the modern world. Wright called the book “the most important thing I’ll ever do in my life.”
“It is all the more humbling to win the Pulitzer in a year of extraordinary nonfiction books and one in which so many journalistic colleagues have risked or lost their lives,”
Wright told the “Washington Post.”
The Looming Tower, Wright said, was written out of a sense of “personal mission” after the 9/11 attacks. He wanted both to “educate people about the roots of Al-Qaeda,” which he believed essential to the fight against Islamic radicalism, and to demonstrate “the abject failure of the American intelligence community to protect us and the ways in which they failed.”
Wright discovered that if it is not a Clash of Civilizations between Islam and the West, then master manipulators like Osama bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahiri and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed are quick to step in and hard-sell a twisted, militant
form of Islam to gullible, poor and disenchanted Muslims.
Wright feels Bin Laden has been hyped to “mythic proportions” through self-promotion and the Western press . He says
Bin Laden is not half the military genius he is made out to be.
The book also notes that US foreign intelligence gathering and law enforcement attempts to track and stop Al-Qaida are as “deeply flawed and fractious” as was John O’Neill , who became the chief Bin Laden hunter and died in the attacks .

From Al Qaeda Underworld to Pinnacle of Storytelling
Join us in congratulating local writer Lawrence Wright, named Monday as winner of the Pulitzer Prize for non-fiction for his stirring book 'The Looming Tower -Al-Qaeda & the Road to 9/11'
This is the second year in a row that an Austin writer has won
the Pulitzer Prize. Last year, a University of Texas professor,
David Oshinsky, won the Pulitzer for history for his book
"Polio: An American Story." Both books are great reading
and well worthy of their accolades and awards.

Wright, a staff writer at The New Yorker magazine , wrote numerous books, articles and screenplays before working on "The Looming Tower." He co-wrote the screenplay for
"The Siege", a 1998 film about a wave of terrorist attacks
in New York that in many ways presaged America's response
to the 9/11 assault.
Praise for Wright's book has been unstinting . It was a finalist for the National Book Award and won two other major awards, the Lionel Gelber Prize and the J. Anthony Lukas Book Prize. In "The Looming Tower," a phrase from the Quran, Wright detailed the rise of al Qaeda. He humanizes all the major characters, including Osama bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahri and others, taking them out of the realm of mythical figures and into the world of flawed human beings .
In an interview with American-Statesman writer Jeff Salamon, Wright said he researched the book for years , taking his time, as he was advised to do. That deep research and commitment paid off , as "Polio" did for Oshinsky, who
spent five years writing it.
Wright, who has a home in Austin, also took his work to the
New York theater scene . He starred in a one-man off-Broadway show called "My Trip to al-Qaeda," a personal look at what his five years of research and work revealed. He referred to the play as an "intimate conversation" , and one reviewer called it a "theatrical seminar."
Wright interviewed some 600 people in 10 countries for the "The Looming Tower" and became deeply immersed in the Arab and Muslim worlds. At one point in his monologue, he mentions that when "The Siege" opened in South Africa, Muslim militants exploded a bomb in a Planet Hollywood restaurant there in protest. Two tourists died in that blast. One of the owners of Planet Hollywood is Bruce Willis, who starred in the movie.
Wright is a former writer for Texas Monthly and author of several books. His bestseller about the attacks on the World Trade Center — those who perpetrated it and those who mishandled the threats — is a monumental achievement. [ FINIS ]

"Money" has no value - people do.
This guy is awarded the Pulitzer Prize for his ' general NONFICTION ' book about how Osama and the boxcutter boys ganged up on New York City, and the Pentagon?!! What a load of feces. I need not wonder about who "owns" the Pulitzer Prize awards ceremonies. Is there ANYTHING that the ZioJews don't own or control?!
