Ex-CIA director calls Iraq war 'illegal'

Former CIA director George Tenet has revealed the US invasion of Iraq was based in large part on incorrect data and was therefore 'illegitimate'.

In his newly-published book, Tenet writes that US leaders 'pulled the wool' over the eyes of the American public by basing their decision to go to war on false documents.

The top US officials he charges in the conspiracy include President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, former Pentagon aid Richard Perle, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and his aide Paul Wolfowitz, as well as the US envoy to the UN, John Bolton.

Tenet's book "At the Center of the Storm: My Years at the CIA" says the Bush administration launched its war against Iraq under the false pretext that Iraq possessed nuclear weapons of mass destruction, a claim that was never proven.

The book also says the White House offered falsified documents to the UN Security Council to justify its offensive war against Iraq.

The former CIA director insists there has never been found any justifiable link between the former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein and the September 11th attacks, a connection that originally helped win public favor for the invasion.

The bogus link, Tenet writes, was the only justification the White House had to invade Iraq under the guise of a "war on terror”.

George Tenet resigned in 2004 as the second-longest-serving director of the Central Intelligence Agency.

President Bush later awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest award given to a civilian, for his services to the United States.
