The Prosthetic Limb Racket in Iraq
A handful of individuals make prosthetic limbs in Iraq, but they must operate in secret. Victims can only get artificial limbs by going through a labyrinth of social connections.
Why? Who could be threatened by artificial limbs?
To make prostheses, you must first get a government permit, which means you must pay extremely high bribes to Iraq's Ministry of Health. If you do not pay a bribe, you will be imprisoned. The Ministry of Health will send U.S. and / or Iraqi soldiers to get you.
