Heavy exchanges of gunfire erupted Thursday night between Lebanese troops besieging a Palestinian refugee camp and people holed up inside, breaking a two-day-old truce.
Prime Minister Fuad Saniora vowed in a speech Thursday to wipe out the “militants” barricaded in the camp, suggesting that he is about to order the Army to storm it.
Palestinians from the Fatah Islam group, estimated in the hundreds, say they will fight off any attack.
The fighting broke out Sunday when government-paid thugs attacked Palestinians in the Nahr el-Bared camp. Some 50 combatants and many civilians have been killed. Thousands of Palestinian civilians — mainly women and children — have fled the camp, but many thousands remain inside. Most of those who fled are packed into the nearby Beddawi refugee camp. They line up at U.N.-run schools and clinics, hoping to get food and mattresses. The Beddawi camp’s six schools are overflowing with refugees. About 50 people sleep in each classroom.
More refugees trickled out of Nahr el-Bared Thursday. They packed into a few pickup trucks, or walked out to the first army checkpoints where they were checked and allowed to proceed.
“How many times do we Palestinians have to be displaced?” cried refugee Nohad Abdel-Al. “Have mercy on us! Have mercy on us,” she told the troops, holding an infant in her arms.
Her husband, Bakri Abdel-Al, said the family’s two-story house was destroyed, and that they had decided to leave “because we are now hearing the fighting will resume.”
Prime Minister Fuad Saniora, backed by the U.S. and israel, is preparing for a showdown. He said Fatah Islam was “a terrorist organization,” and blamed the group for “attempting to ride on the suffering and the struggle of the Palestinian people.”
Refugees in the eleven other Palestinian refugee camps are angry about the army bombardments that have partially destroyed the Nahr el-Bared camp.
Meanwhile a bomb exploded Wednesday night in the Aley mountain resort overlooking Beirut, a 90-minute drive south of Nahr el-Bared. The blast, which injured 16 people, was the third in the Beirut area since Sunday. One person has been killed and a dozen injured in the two other attacks.

Fatah Islam denied responsibility for the bombings, but it threatened to take the battle outside Tripoli if the army invades the camp.
Troops sunk two small boats carrying Fatah Islam members who tried to flee from the camp via the sea.
All fleeing passengers on the two dinghies were killed.
