Almost half of all global assets owned by only 1% of the world's adults

One percent of the world's adults owns 40 percent of all global assets, according to a United Nations report that describes a growing gap between rich and poor.

That chunk of the world's wealth is held by the 37 million people with a net worth of $500,000 or more, according to the Helsinki-based World Institute for Development Economics of the U.N. University.

The report - the first by the United Nations to measure components of household wealth including homes, land, investments and debts - focuses on net worth rather than income, Bloomberg reports.

Researchers defined wealth as the value of physical and financial assets minus debts.

"Income inequality has been rising for the past 20-25 years and we think that is true for inequality in the distribution of wealth," said James Davies, a professor of economics at the University of Western Ontario, one of the report's authors.

"There is a whole group of problems in developing countries that make it difficult for people to build up assets, which are important, since life is so precarious," he said.

The gulf between rich and poor nations has long concerned politicians and economists, who say it is one of the biggest obstacles to development, Scotsman.com reports.

The world's total household wealth amounted to $125 trillion in the year 2000, a sum which, averaged out, should give every adult $20,500. But in some countries, average per capita wealth was below $2,000, while the richest ranked many times higher, thestar.com says.

According to the study, almost all of the world's richest individuals live in North America , Europe , and rich Asia-Pacific countries.

Each of these groups of countries contribute about one third of the members of the world's wealthiest 10 per cent.

China occupies much of the middle third of the global wealth distribution, while India, Africa, and low-income Asian countries dominate the bottom third.

A small number of countries, the study finds, account for most of the wealthiest 10 per cent in the world.

One-quarter are Americans and another 20 per cent are Japanese. These two countries feature even more strongly among the richest one per cent of individuals in the world, with 37 per cent residing in the USA and 27 per cent in Japan.

The researchers found that assets of USD 2,200 per adult placed a household in the top half of the world wealth distribution in the year 2000.

Using currency exchange rates, global household wealth amounted to USD 125 trillion in the year 2000, equivalent to roughly three times the value of total global production (GDP) or to USD 20,500 per person, Economictimes reports.

More importantly about these numbers, however, is the debilitating effect they are having upon the American society as a whole due to the fact that these horrific numbers are a direct reflection of the Totalitarian Fascist Nation they have truly become. So draconian has life in the United States become, in fact, that their Nation's internal security police, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), this past week received permission to monitor all American citizens by eavesdropping on their cell phones, and which according to these reports they are able to do even if the cell phones are turned off.

Just as devastating to the American people as the total loss of their freedoms is the economic nightmare they are now entering, and as we can read as reported by Britain's The Guardian News Service in their article titled "Plunging dollar will set world markets reeling", and which says:

"The slowdown in the US economy, which has sent the dollar into freefall over the past fortnight, will have devastating knock-on effects in markets around the world, analysts warn. As the US slows, and consumers in the world's biggest economy feel the buying power of the dollar in their pocket declining, global growth will be hit hard, economists say. The greenback took yet another turn for the worse on Friday, after a survey of the US manufacturing sector showed output declining for the first time in more than three years."

Texas is the leading unit of the USA on the number of executed death sentences: 355 deaths

The day of November 30, 2005 will mark the execution of the 1,000th death sentence in the USA since the moment when death penalty was reinstated in the country: murderer Robin Lovitt sentenced to death penalty in Virginia back in 1999 will die by electric chair.

US-based organization Death Penalty Information Center released a survey of facts regarding the state of affairs in the field of death sentences and their execution in the USA in connection with the forthcoming significant event in the nation. The report presents pure statistics and lacks any comments, which makes the document rather an objective material for further analysis.

Adversaries of death penalty made US authorities pass an adequate moratorium in 1967. Death for severe crimes was substituted with lifetime imprisonment without pardon. In 1972 the US Supreme Court abolished the laws about death penalty in several states, where they were practiced, and described them as incidental and willful. However, a sudden upsurge of severe crimes in the USA made the Supreme Court retrieve the right for authorities in 1972 to apply death penalty against inmates.

For the time being, death penalty is excluded from legal systems of only 12 of USA's 50 states: Alaska, Hawaii, Iowa, Man, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Vermont, Rhode Island, West Virginia and Wisconsin. There is no death penalty in Columbia DC, where the US capital is situated, and in US-controlled Puerto Rico. Death penalty moratorium is currently in effect in the states of Illinois and New Jersey.

The USA is proud of the fact that the national legal system has been searching for humane methods of executing death penalties for 120 years already. The process was initiated on 1 January 1889, when the authorities of the state of New York passed the Electrical Execution Law. The first execution with the use of electric chair took place on 6 August 1890: electric current killed a man named as William Kemmler, who hacked his lover, Matilda Ziegler, to death with an axe.

Nebraska is the only state in present-day USA, which uses electric chair as the only execution tool and has no other alternative for it. In all other 37 states, where death penalty is legal, convicted criminals are put down by means of lethal injections. Alternative methods of execution include: electric chair (Alabama, Arkansas, South Caroline, Virginia), gas chamber (Wyoming, California, Maryland, Missouri, Mississippi, Arizona), hanging (Washington and New Hampshire) and shooting (Idaho and Oklahoma).

About 3,400 people are currently waiting for their death sentences to be executed in the USA. It is noteworthy that 122 people from 25 states have been struck out of the sad list since 1973, when supplementary investigation found them not guilty of incriminated crimes.
