Fiji rocks post-Colonial Empire

It seems, bad habits die hard.

Former British Colonies can't stand the idea that the people of Fiji had the courage to exercise their otherwise meaningless independence.

The Commonwealth, an association of mostly former British colonial territories, suspended Fiji on Friday after a bloodless military coup this week that has been widely condemned.

"Fiji's military regime should forthwith be suspended from the councils of the Commonwealth," the group's Secretary-General Don McKinnon said in a statement.

McKinnon, who said he hoped to travel to Fiji in the near future to press for a return to democracy, said the suspension decision had been taken unanimously by a meeting of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group.

The Commonwealth is an association of 53 countries with 1.8 billion citizens, one-third of the world's population. It does not have a formal charter but promotes peace, democracy, the rule of law, equality for all and to end poverty.

How is that different from what Fiji's new PM announced two days ago?

Or, is it different because he speaks for himself and not the British corporate empire?

It condemned the bloodless coup earlier this week saying it was a serious violation of Commonwealth principles. Suspension will mean the end of technical assistance programmes and could damage trade.

Outrageous.

For a few British crumbs, they complain about a completely bloodless coup - where the hell is their condemnation of the illegal war started by their former colonizers, that's (so far) claimed over half a million lives???

“If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you; May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.”

--Samuel Adams

Any man with an ounce of dignity would bite the hand that feeds him, once he realizes that the other hand bleeds him.

[Coup Leader] Bainimarama claimed the Qarase government had “undermined the constitution by engaging in bribery and corruption” and proposed legislation that seriously disadvantaged Fiji. His opposition has centred on two bills proposed by the Qarase government—the first establishing indigenous Fijian tribal ownership over the country’s coastal land

I know nothing about Fiji, and am not sure if this is true, but if so, it seems that the ousted Fiji PM was actually trying to help the indigenous people. no?

perhaps the military takeover was sponsored by the current land owners, big resorts, etc...

I have a much better perspective on the crisis after reading it - the mainstream media is so shallow.

It hadn't occurred to me that the coup leader could also be lying about what he intends to do.

And, certainly, the money for the guns had to come from somewhere corrupt.

what does a url filter do?

in the comment above you had to copy and paste the link- the url filter automatically turns all http://wufys.com into clickable links

I have to disagree with the WSW assertion that the Qarase government was there for the people. Poverty in Fiji has increased massively under his guidance a huge loan from the IMF was about to be taken, against many economists wishes which would have increased poverty further i.e. look what happened in Africa with debt. Vat in Fiji was about to be increased which would have further penalised the poor. And all of the money coming in from UN military operations went straight ot the government and not to the soldiers and their families.
Austrasilia and New Zealand are on a program of open colonisation. You only have to look at the last coup to see whats going on. George Speight was an Austrilaian citizen armed by the Israeli ambassador (he has openly admitted this fact) working to instate an open freemason who proceeded corruptly to make Fiji economically weaker and more dependant on mainly Austrailian aid. Qrswave is right - there is no protection for indigenous people and their independace under western rules democracy. The idea that Austrailia with its genecidal origins and its continued murderous subjigation of the Aborigonal people has any moral authority is beyond a joke. Lastly to anyone thinking this area is insignificant should consider the strategic position of all of the pacific islands in relation to America and China. As in alot of things activity on the margins is very telling.
