Tony Blair kicks off his first day on the job with a bang . . .
Twelve Palestinians died on Wednesday as Israel launched twin offensives in the Gaza Strip, triggering the deadliest violence since Hamas fighters overran the territory 12 days ago.
The violence came amid a renewed push for peace and the naming of outgoing British Prime Minister Tony Blair as the special envoy of the four major powers mediating Middle East peace.
* * * Abbas condemned the Gaza operations as a "criminal action" at a news conference with visiting Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in the West Bank capital of Ramallah.
Hamas lashed out at the "barbaric massacre" and the "first bloody fruit of Sharm el-Sheikh" while Egypt warned that the offensives further aggravated an already extremely complex situation.
Blair's new role in world politics was announced in New York by the United Nations and United States after he ended a decade in power and was succeeded to the premiership by his former finance minister, Gordon Brown.
Representatives of the quartet -- the European Union, Russia, United Nations and United States -- had discussed offering Blair a mandate at talks in Jerusalem on Tuesday.
Israel welcomed the appointment, hailing Blair as "a friend" of the Jewish state, while Abbas said he was ready to work with Blair "to arrive at a peaceful solution on the basis of two states."
Hamas, however, derided the appointment, saying Blair could not be trusted to be impartial.
"Blair, who supported the American occupation in Iraq and Afghanistan, may not be a man of peace," Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhum told AFP in Gaza.
"His appointment is not acceptable to Hamas nor to the Palestinians. He will not do anything to support the Palestinian interests but will do everything to support the Israeli occupation," he added.

is Mr. Blair with this promotion into World's envoy to ME peace mission. How ironic and abominable world has become to appoint such a demon as the peace envoy. Why don't they give peace a chance...
