After Peretz, Ashkenazi looks through shut binoculars

What's the deal with closed binoculars and members of the Israeli military institution? After former Defense Minister Amir Peretz's famous picture looking through shut binoculars, the new chief of staff Gabi Ashkenazi makes the same mistake.
In the Beit Salem camp in the Negev desert, Ashkenazi was watching a military drill through his binoculars, however he seems to have forgotten to open the lenses.
Worth mentioning, the Israeli army sought to open the lenses of all binoculars before the drill begins so as Peretz's mistake would not be repeated. Yet, Ashkenazi shut his binoculars and lifted it to watch the drill!
