Syria says it fired on Israeli aircraft

AP 38 minutes ago

Syrian air defenses opened fire on Israeli aircraft that violated Syrian airspace, a Syrian military spokesman said Thursday.

The Israelis broke the sound barrier and "dropped ammunition" over deserted areas of northern Syria overnight, the spokesman was quoted by the official Syrian Arab News Agency.

"We warn the Israeli enemy government against this flagrant aggressive act, and retain the right to respond in an appropriate way," the Syrian spokesman said.

It was not clear if Syria was accusing the Israelis of using warplanes or some type of other aircraft such as drones.

"The Israeli enemy aircraft infiltrated into the Arab Syrian territory through the northern border, coming from the Mediterranean heading toward the eastern region, breaking the sound barrier," the spokesman said. "Air defense units confronted them and forced them to leave after they dropped some ammunition in deserted areas without causing any human or material damage."

Israel's army said it was looking into the report.

Israel acknowledges flying over Lebanon routinely, but it is unclear how often its aircraft fly over Syria.

At the beginning of last summer's war against Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon, Israeli warplanes buzzed the palace of Syrian President Bashar Assad in what analysts called a warning to Damascus. They also flew over Assad's summer home in the coastal city of Latakia, after Syrian-backed Palestinian militants in Gaza captured a young Israeli soldier.

They were planning for attacking Lebanon again and Syria.
Oh God, I pray this can be stopped.

Syria says its air defences opened fire on Israel aircraft (Extra)

Sep 6, 2007, 12:03 GMT

Damascus - A military spokesman said Syria opened fire on Israel jet violations, Syria's SANA news agency and Dubai-based al- Arabiya TV said Thursday.

Its air defences opened fire on Israeli war planes which had entered Syrian airspace, but 'without causing human or material loss', according to SANA.

Syria and Israel remain technically at war following the seizure by Israel of the Golan Heights in 1967.

DEBKAfile Reports: Alert declared in Israeli Air and Air Defense Forces after Syria claimed Israeli jets penetrated its air space

September 6, 2007, 4:54 PM (GMT+02:00)

Leaves have also been canceled at IDF bases. Israeli official spokesmen declined to comment on the Syrian News Agency claim that Israeli warplanes entered its air space from the Mediterranean Sea at dawn Thursday - heading northeast and breaking the sound barrier. Syria fire forced them to leave without causing casualties, says the report. Arab and European stations quote Syrian sources as accusing the Israeli air force of bombing empty areas. DEBKAfile: The Kamishli area mentioned in the report is where the Syrian, Turkish and Iraqi borders meet.

The IDF spokesman say the incident is under investigation.

A Syrian spokesman warned “the Zionist enemy against repeating aggressive action” and said his government reserved the right to respond.

DEBKAfile military sources speculate the Syrians may have referred to a possible Israeli surveillance flight which finding itself under fire may have dumped a fuel tank to gain speed; Damascus may be seeking to raise the military temperatures between the two countries for its own purposes, or fabricating a pretext to go on the offensive against Israeli targets on the Golan.

Syria 'fires on Israel warplanes'

Syria says its air defences have opened fire on Israeli war planes which had entered Syrian airspace overnight.
Israeli planes had "dropped ammunition" over desert areas of Syria, before being forced to leave, according to the official Syrian news agency, SANA.

Israel radio quoted an unnamed Israeli army source as saying no air strike had been carried out, Reuters agency said.

The Syrian news agency says the action took place "without causing human or material loss".

Syria and Israel have remained technically at war since the seizure of the Golan Heights in 1967.

Tensions between Israeli and Syria have been rising in recent months. Both countries' leaders have said they do not want a war, while accusing the other side of arming for a conflict.

Syria says it last fired at Israeli warplanes in June 2006, when Israeli aircraft flew over the summer residence of the Syrian president, while he was inside.

It will be interesting to see how the mainstream media handles this. I bet they will find a way to put all of the blame on Syria.

I guess it's not too late for summer troubles. I wonder how this will pan out.

"Israel's army said it was looking into the report."

Yeah, right. The IDF will find itself as pure as the driven snow and place all the blame on Syria for having the audacity to defend it's airspace.

Where's Cheney at these days? He's sure is keeping a low profile.

Maybe he's in the same bunker he used to help orchestrate the 9/11 attacks, only this time, he's cooking up the war against Iran while Junior is playing prez down under.

Right now, one of the cable news channels is running a story on a man using a lawn mower to take his wife to the hospital.
Damn, how would we ever get by without their spot on news???

they've been doing this kind of thing with US citizens of Arab origin for some time now... and US immigration frankly does the same thing with Americans of Arab origin..
It's ugly... but then, under the Bush regime, the US has become quite ugly and more and more of a mirror image of Israel..

..get those traitors!

..banish 'em as CONVICTED WAR-CRIMINALS to their beloved azrael, where they will be defeated by the righteous arabs, and forever live under their rule, for no other country wants a traitor..

..and sieze all their ill gotten gains..

..of course there's a better punishment available to those who would stay..
