What's all the Hoo-Hah about Hip-Hop?
What's all the Hoo-Hah about Hip-Hop?
Last night I went to the movies and saw a fascinating video about Hip-Hop in Columbia.
And it brought home to me what a wonderful form of non-violent resistance (to abuse of dominance) hip hop actually is and I understood for the first time the appeal - Graffiti for the artists, video for the filmmakers, music and beats for the musicians, and words for the poets and vocalists.
All these disparate forms of expression are tied together under a unifying theme of a collective response to slavery and genocide at the hands of the wealthy and self involved who control the distribution of a region's resources from their own homes offshore.
And I understood why - like Islam - Hip Hop has popped up everywhere. In my own country New Zealand it is very strong especially with Oceanic browned skinned folks (btw, it is also interesting to note that all Maaori now have European or Asian ancestry as well).
During the 1980's economic structural reform programs were implemented that involved the sale of our state owned enterprises to multinational corporations - the first people to feel the pinch of this retarded move were Maaori and Pacific Islanders and this has been revealed in statistics that show a
tapering off of the slowly rising life expectancy levels in these demographic groups over the last four decades. As the cost of food, healthcare, education, transport, insurance, consumer goods, oil, and everything else, went up - the life expectancy began to go down. Our manufacturing base has dissolved and moved offshore and Fractional Reserve Banking of course also plays a role in this ugly war on our bodies. If you don't know what Fractional Reserve Banking is, then I suggest (for your sake, at least) that you google it).
The poorly thought out idea of terrorism as a unifying threat is still being pushed on the populace by our crap newspapers and TV - and the first operation under New Zealand's Terrorism Suppression Act was carried out here a few days ago - see recent WUFYS post "New Zealand - Another Bastion Of White Supremacy").
Predictably, the local media response is the sort of thing that you would expect from some pre-teen creative writing course.
What's happening in Columbia is also happening here.
If a region's populations have their wealth drained out from under them by foreign interests (as is happening in my country and also in all of yours) - then, like clockwork, that region will militarise.
The people there will buy weapons
(off arms dealers) and weapons will also flood the region from the foreign power/s doing all the taking. And these foreign powers will task some of the people that populate the region to kill off the other people that live there - in return for wealth and power. Anyone who resists this deeply obnoxious global process is called a terrorist.

"Anyone who resists this deeply obnoxious global process is called a terrorist."
But, resist we must - and we must do it more collectively. We must organize.
For the past few days I have been so busy, but more and more I see the urgent need for some real-time collaboration.
WUFYS and other sites like it are good to increase awareness and inform - but, we need more.
We must brainstorm - and for that we need real-time interaction.
