That’s Duane Clarridge, head of the CIA’s Latin American division in the early 1980s.
Salvador Allende was the Hugo Chavez of Chile. When Kissinger moved to attack Allende, Mr. Clarridge gave money, arms and other support to General Pinochet, and ran Pinochet’s propaganda operations. Under Clarridge’s guidance, Pinochet used British aircraft to bomb the presidential palace. As the bombs destroyed everything around him, Allende delivered a last message to the people and shot himself. Then Clarridge and Kissinger told Pinochet to round up hundreds of thousands of people and put them into Santiago’s main stadium, which became a concentration camp. Tens of thousands were tortured to death. Then the Clarridge-Pinochet death squads fanned out across Chile, burning, raping, and assassinating as they went. Kissinger was most pleased.
I know about this Clarridge asshole. He’s a psychopath.
He wrote a self-aggrandizing memoir about how he “saved democracy” in Latin America, titled “A Spy For All Seasons.”

I confused this Clarridge guy with another CIA person named Clements.
Clarridge was involved in the El Salvador nightmare, not the Chilean one.
(But he's still a psychopath.)
