US withdraws Mideast resolution at UN after ISRAEL objects
UNITED NATIONS - In an about face, the United States on Friday withdrew a U.N. resolution endorsing this week's agreement by Israeli and Palestinian leaders to try to reach a Mideast peace settlement by the end of 2008, apparently after Israel objected.
Deputy Ambassador Alejandro Wolff informed the Security Council that the United States was pulling the resolution from consideration less than 24 hours after Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad introduced it and welcomed the "very positive" response from council members.
Well-informed diplomats said Israel, a close U.S. ally, did not want a resolution, which would bring the Security Council into the fledgling negotiations with the Palestinians. The diplomats, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue, said Khalilzad introduced the draft resolution without getting broad support from the Israelis, Palestinians and the Bush administration.
"It's not the proper venue," Israel's deputy ambassador Daniel Carmon said after Friday's council meeting. "We feel that the appreciation of Annapolis has other means of being expressed than in a resolution.
Ambassador Nassir Al-Nasser of Qatar, the only Arab member on the Security Council, said Thursday "we are happy with the language as it is" in the U.S. draft resolution.
"I am happy that the council is dealing with this issue," he said. "For me, this is the main thing."
Hmmm, why wouldn't Israel want the UN Security Council, that had initially welcomed the resolution, looking into and commenting on the resolution?
Could it be Israel doesn't want the world to look closer at it's state sponsored ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians?
Once again, the tail--Israel--has wagged the dog--the USA--into getting what it wants, when it wants it.
While the American foreign policy establishment kisses major Israeli ass, the indigenous Palestinians are being subjected to life in the world's largest prison, the Gaza Strip.
All paid for with American tax dollars and covered up by American politicans, whose first and only loyalty is to Israel.

Nice article. It's going to continue because they want to take it all.

early yesterday, before the US revoked the resolution, the following story caught my eye at the New York Sun:
Israel Left in Dark on U.N. Middle East Plan

UNITED NATIONS — In an unusual move, America's U.N. mission yesterday circulated a proposal to the Security Council supporting agreements reached at Annapolis between Israelis and Palestinian Arabs — before the text had been examined closely by Jerusalem, America's closest Middle Eastern ally.
After closed-door consultations among the council's 15 members, diplomats from China and the only Arab member, Qatar — and some Palestinian Arabs — expressed support for the American proposal. But while the American ambassador to the United Nations, Zalmay Khalilzad, hailed the council members' backing, his Israeli colleague, Dan Gillerman, said he knew "very little" about the proposed resolution.
=================
This is a very significant development for a number of reasons:
(1) That the US would circulate a proposed SC resolution without first running it by israel is unprecedented and demonstrates that israeli is not in complete control.
Security Council resolutions have been ignored by israel before. But, they are nevertheless very significant and given what has recently happened to Iraq for "defying" security council resolutions and what they plan on doing to Iran for the same, israel does NOT want to have another ruling against them. Hence, the remark that "it's not the proper venue."
(2) Contrary to what we might think, the US ambassador is not under israeli control. This public fall out will exacerbate the differences between them and may ultimately lead to his resignation.
This is very good news and israelis must be gnashing their teeth.

" That the US would circulate a proposed SC resolution without first running it by israel is unprecedented and demonstrates that israeli is not in complete control."
I hope you're right. For the U.S. to show a little common sense and actual independence from Israel is a good thing.
Even better would be the U.S. not getting cold feet and doing the bidding of its puppetmasters in Tel Aviv.
If one was paranoid and after nearly SEVEN years of rule by the Bush/Cheney Junta, who isn't?
But if one was, one could speculate that they are actually trying for "peace" in Occupied Palestine to damp down, even temporarily,
the screams coming from Gaza.
In the same way they are artifically creating "peace" in Iraq, to show the Congress and America that things are under control.
And when that propaganda reaches a crescendo, they'll launch the attack on Iran.
