Israel gives Christmas blessing to its troops

Yesterday (Mon 24 Dec 07) Israel said it will not press any charges against officers who ordered the use of cluster bombs against Lebanese civilians last year. Israel began its 34-day attack on July 12, 2006, and fired about 4 million cluster bomblets on Lebanon.

An Israeli investigation announced today that its slaughter of civilians was a "concrete military necessity," and did not violate international humanitarian law.

As many as 1 million bomblets failed to explode, and now endanger civilians. Israeli cluster bombs and land mines have murdered more than 30 people since the 2006 attack. Many cluster bombs were used as a “scorched earth” campaign when Israel knew it had lost, and was withdrawing.

Israel says it fired the cluster bombs at open and uninhabited areas from which Hezbollah forces operated, and in which no civilians were present.

In Beirut, a Lebanese government official rejected the Israeli military prosecutors' decision, saying the whole world has condemned Israel's use of cluster bombs.

"The Israeli decision indicates that there is no difference between the judicial authority and political authority in Israel. They all work to commit and cover up crimes against humanity," the official told The Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with government regulations.
