A 9/11 Gov’t Conspiracy? ‘I Wouldn’t Be Surprised,’ Says Tikkun Editor

Rabbi Michael Lerner, the longtime left-wing activist and editor of Tikkun magazine, has published an essay saying he is open to the possibility that the American government may have been behind the September 11 terrorist attacks.
“I would not be surprised to learn that some branch of our government conspired either actively to promote or passively to allow the attack on 9/11,” Lerner wrote in an essay published in the new book, “9/11 and American Empire: Christians, Jews, and Muslims Speak Out.” Lerner added that he would also not be surprised if it turned out that the attacks were not the result of a government conspiracy.
“I am agnostic on the question of what happened on 9/11,” he wrote in his essay for the book, which included articles by other contributors arguing that a government conspiracy was behind the September 11 attacks. “As other authors in this collection have shown, there are huge holes in the official story and contradictions that suggest that we do not know the whole story.”
Contacted by the Forward, Lerner repeatedly insisted that he was, in fact, “skeptical” — a word that did not appear in his essay — toward claims advanced by the book’s other contributors of a government conspiracy.
“I’m skeptical about this material, and I wrote this essay with a clear element of skepticism,” he said. “It was clear in my head that I was being very skeptical about what they were saying.”
Lerner, the founder of Tikkun and the newly formed Network of Spiritual Progressives, is arguably the most prominent contributor to “9/11 and American Empire.” In the 1990s he gained national attention after a meeting with then-first lady Hillary Clinton, during which they discussed his ideas about the need for a new “politics of meaning.” Since then, he has emerged as a leader of efforts to reconcile left-wing politics and religious belief, calling for a “Spiritual Covenant” to transform America.
The Berkeley, Calif.-based Renewal rabbi occupies a distinctive niche on the political landscape, keeping one foot planted in the Jewish community and the other in the world of left-wing activism. Maintaining credibility in both milieus has involved a delicate balancing act. Lerner, for instance, has been an outspoken critic of Israeli policies, but he also has firmly defended Israel’s right to exist. Recently, Lerner sent an e-mail to supporters saying that he had recently spoken on the phone with former president Jimmy Carter in an effort to build support for a left-wing pro-Israel lobby to take on more hawkish elements in the Jewish community.
The book in which Lerner’s essay appears is billed as having been “inspired by” David Ray Griffin’s “The New Pearl Harbor,” a seminal text of the so-called “9/11 Truth” movement. The new book includes an essay by Griffin in which he makes the case that the September 11 attacks were likely “orchestrated, like many previous false-flag attacks, by U.S. agents as a pretext for a war to expand the American empire.”
In his own essay for “9/11 and American Empire,” Lerner wrote: “For those who watched the reactionary political uses made of this tragedy, it’s easy to conjure up a variety of possible conspiratorial motives that would have led the president, the vice president, or some branch of the armed forces or CIA or FBI or other ‘security’ forces to have passively or actively participated in a plot to re-credit militarism and war. We’ve learned enough about the subsequent ways that the Bush administration lied to the American public to no longer be shocked if there had been some active involvement by them in these deeds.”
But, Lerner immediately added, “Neither would I be surprised if, when all the archives were opened and all the communications revealed, it turned out that there was some other non-conspiratorial explanation for elements of the story that currently seem to make no sense.”
Lerner told the Forward that he has good reason to be suspicious of the government.
“I’ve had a lot of personal experience of government lying and doing things that are very destructive and pretending that they weren’t doing it,” Lerner said. “I was part of antiwar demonstrations in which violence was done and the violence later turned out was being done by police agents. I had that personal experience…. After that, nothing surprises me about what this government would do to achieve what its perceived ends are. Nothing would surprise me. That doesn’t mean I believe it. That doesn’t mean that I believe that that’s actually happening right now.”
In his essay, Lerner argued that searching for conspiracies — “even when there are real conspiracies” — tends not to be politically useful. He wrote that focusing on conspiracy theories wrongly leads people to believe that “the major problems we face are those generated by evil people in powerful positions, not on something more systemic.” Lerner wrote that September 11 conspiracy theorists should work to create a “Spiritual Covenant” to heal American society.
Still, his essay offered words of encouragement to those who are engaged in such theorizing.
“I salute the people in this collection of articles who are doing an amazing job of examining what may prove to be one of the most perverse conspiracies in the history of democratic governments,” Lerner wrote.
Asked about this passage, Lerner responded, “It says ‘may.’ This is very tentative. It’s not like what I believe to be.” He added: “This is like a bone thrown to them to say, ‘Well, sure, keep up the good work, go and investigate.’ I don’t feel that this investigation is going to lead anyplace, but it might, and if it does, I don’t think that it’s going to produce a conspiracy of the president and the vice president…. I would be surprised if that turned out to be true. So maybe I shouldn’t say, as I said before, ‘I wouldn’t be surprised.’ I guess I would be a little surprised.”
Lerner said that Tikkun is planning to publish an article by Griffin in its March issue, which would be accompanied by “a little note saying if you go to our Web site, you’ll see why we don’t agree with this.” Although he says he does not agree with all of Griffin’s conclusions, Lerner said that Griffin — who has suggested that the Twin Towers were brought down by “controlled demolition” — draws attention to important unexplained facts about the attacks.
While Lerner is willing — if only skeptically — to entertain those who posit a plot by the American government, he has no such indulgence for another popular conspiracy theory, namely that Israel was behind the September 11 attacks. He said that whereas the Bush administration benefited politically from the attacks, and thus had a “plausible motivation,” Israel had no such interest in seeing the attacks occur. “Anything about Israel and the relationship to 9/11,” Lerner said, “I think is total baloney.”

Although this is a very wishy-washy, non-committal acknowledgement that "maybe" something truly diabolical happened on 9/11 that is still being covered up, the fact that he feels the 'need' to make this declaration indicates that this whole thing is about to blow and he doesn't want to be caught still doggedly clinging to the official line.

Zionist Jews blame the U.S. government in order to divert public attention from Mossad's advisory role in 9-11. Russia to Build Up Number of Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles — Defense Minister

The Russian military will sharply increase the number of new intercontinental ballistic missiles to be deployed this year as part of an ambitious weapons modernization plan, The Associated Press news agency quoted Russian Defense Minister as saying on Wednesday.
Sergei Ivanov said the military would get 17 new ballistic missiles —- a drastic rise compared with an average four deployed annually over recent years. The purchases are part of a weapons modernization program for 2007-2015 worth about $189 billion.
Ivanov said in a speech before lawmakers that the plan envisages the deployment of the total of 34 new silo-based Topol-M missiles and their control units, as well as another 50 such missiles mounted on mobile launchers through 2015; Russia so far has deployed more than 40 silo-based Topol-Ms.
President Vladimir Putin and other Russian officials have described the Topol-M as a bulwark of Russia’s nuclear might for years to come, and hailed its ability to penetrate any prospective missile defenses. Putin last week dismissed Washington’s claims that missile defense sites it hopes to establish in Poland and the Czech Republic were intended to counter threats posed by Iran, and said that Russia would respond by developing even more efficient weapons systems.
A rising tide of oil revenues gave Russia a chance to increase its defense spending following a desperate money shortage that plagued the military throughout the 1990s.
“The economic growth and the scientific achievements allow us to reach a qualitatively new level in military procurement,” Ivanov said.
Russia’s defense budget which stood at $8.1 billion in 2001 nearly quadrupled to $31 billion this year, Ivanov said.
But despite a steady increase in military spending in recent years, Putin said last week that Moscow’s military budget was still 25 times smaller than Washington’s defense spending.
Ivanov said that a share of weapons purchases in the military budget also has been growing over years. This year, the military will spend $5.4 billion on new weapons, buying aircraft, tanks and other armored vehicles and four new satellites, he said.

We are supposed to believe that Goodman, Cockburn, Ketcham, Perelman, Gonzalez et al are all dim enough to be taken in by the government's claim of "suicidal militant Muslims", based on planted passports and phony videos where they couldn't even get the right actor to play the part of Bin Laden. I also know that an individual at the Pentagon did a search on Thursday evening on Ask.com for hmtd in london bombings, so let's hope there is not a plot afoot to frame innocents as "suicide bombers with HTMD bombs". There are question marks about Bollyn. One Zionist tactic is to have their agents pose as "no-planers", so newcomers take a look at the truth movement, make the reasonable equation "no-planers = no-brainers", and conclude that the truth movement are all nutcases. A much more subtle technique would be to have the agent compile articles designed to have a great appeal to those of us who are aware of Zionist skullduggery. In that respect, Bollyn's work is second to none. The agent would probably pepper the good information with a small proportion of disinformation - just enough that critics could easily dismiss all of his work as that of a "liar". It might be that the articles were 100% accurate, but the agent would carry out strange behavior to discredit himself, such as provoking an arrest and assault by police, and then hyping the event up in his reports. Eric Hufschmid is a more suspicious character than Bollyn. He claims, for example, that Germar Rudolf and David Duke are part of the Zionist "criminal network", and that the Apollo landings were a "hoax". Rupert Murdoch has just given $100 million worth of News Corp shares to each of his six children. James, Eric Hufschmid's brother-in-law, is the heir apparent now that Lachlan has resigned his executive posts. Bollyn's support of and association with Hufschmid makes Bollyn less credible.

Additionally, in accepting that the towers collapsed at virtually free-fall speed ("the weight of the collapsing top storeys generated a momentum the rest of the building could not arrest"), Monbiot shows no awareness that this explanation violates the law of conservation of momentum.
Monbiot also appears oblivious to NIST's failure to explain that, although fire could not have melted any steel, there were pools of molten metal under the rubble, and these pools remained molten for weeks after the collapse; that dozens of people, including firefighters, news reporters and fleeing victims, all reported massive explosions; the clear video evidence of explosions taking place; that virtually all the concrete was pulverised into tiny particles; the apparent disintegration of the central steel core; and the destruction of all the evidence from America's biggest crime scene, which was covertly transported to Asian and African shores before any forensic examination could take place.
Monbiot then endorses the idea that Building 7 collapsed because "thousands of gallons of diesel [were poured] on to the fire" - oblivious to the fact that, even if an enormous fire could have caused a symmetrical collapse (which required all 81 steel columns to miraculously fail simultaneously), there was, as photographs and eyewitnesses reveal, no enormous fire. Monbiot also appears unaware that several engineers and demolition experts, after studying videos, have declared that this collapse can only have been caused by explosives.
Monbiot suggests that thousands of people must have been involved in the conspiracy, as if the official story must therefore be true. We have no clue as to how many (though some suggest probably fewer than 1,000); but wasn't the Manhattan project, involving 100,000, kept secret, even from Vice-President Truman, until weeks before the first atom bomb was dropped?
Monbiot then suggests that CounterPunch - by refuting the film's claims - has to be correct, because it is a left-leaning newspaper. But acceptance of the official "conspiracy" theory is not a left or right political issue. It is about whether we should accept unconditionally a story which defeats the laws of physics, denies the abundance of witness testimony, and rejects video evidence put forward by an organisation, which, in hindsight, we know had the means, motive and opportunity, and also has a record of being economical with the truth.
We agree that our movie can't answer all the questions that millions of people now have - but the fact that Loose Change is the most downloaded film in internet history is the strongest argument for an honest public debate, and a truly independent inquiry. Quozz, I found the thread where we previously discussed Bollyn's veracity. You're right, you said Christopher returned your email and this said a lot for his character and veracity. (When I emailed Piper, Thorn/Makufka, and Daryl Bradford Smith, DBS was the only one who replied.) It was oldranger, not I, who said a returned email was not an indicator of great character, but I would tend to agree with him.
I never had Christopher Bollyn fingered as a no-planer. What I meant was that the Zionists would have some of their disinformation shills pose as no-planers who say that there was a CGI script, massive hologram, or mass hypnosis, and the holes in the Towers roughly corresponding to the outline of Boeing 767s were produced by cleverly placed charges. My response to that theory would be that it is far sillier than the official theory of suicide hijackers, and brings to mind a set of assembly instructions for a no-planer's brain: "Take a few ounces of sawdust, sprinkle into a circle, and have a team of demolition experts cleverly position charges such that the sawdust is all shot into a tiny little space."
Another very different class of shill would be briefed to take a very subtle approach. He would provide mostly high-quality information, naming of names like Jabotinsky and Netanyahu, add a small amount of deliberate disinformation - e.g. about seismic spikes, or being tasered whilst restrained by a heavily armored covert gang suppression unit, or David Duke secretly working for the Zionists, or Apollo landings were a hoax. These agents would be provided with information of great appeal to anti-Zionists, many of whom would not suspect them of working for the other side. The "researcher" (agent) would appear to be very much ahead of the pack, outfoxing their rivals. The misinformation would allow critics to easily dismiss all of these agents' work by painting them as "liars", although they would have a loyal - almost cult-like - following amongst anti-Zionists. It would also help if the agents were of nerdy appearance, or if they could get themselves arrested and tasered and then hype up their version of events until the story was not credible. The good information provided by the agents would be that which the plotters believed would leak into the public domain, so it would be better coming from their agents who could then be dismissed as "racists", "liars", "mentally unstable", etc.

I beg you to note that among those making attacks upon us will also be organs established by us, but they will attack exclusively points that we have pre-determined to alter. ...all journals published by us will be of the most opposite, in appearance, tendencies and opinions, thereby creating confidence in us and bringing over to us our quite unsuspicious opponents, who will thus fall into our trap ... In the third rank we shall set up our own, to all appearance, opposition, which, in at least one of its organs, will present what looks like the very antipodes to us. Our real opponents at heart will accept this simulated opposition as their own and will show us their cards. ... These attacks upon us will also serve another purpose, namely, that our subjects will be convinced of the existence of full freedom of speech and so give our agents an occasion to affirm that all organs which oppose us are empty babblers, since they are incapable of finding any substantial objections to our orders.
Bollyn seems to have staged the arrest, provoked the police by being deliberately belligerent (running off as if to get a weapon, mouthing off to them in the squad car and getting slammed against the glass - if that part is to be believed), then changed his story to tasered whilst restrained after searching for reports of taserings on the internet, then coming up with the story of the "elbow injury" after he walked home (his brother refusing to give him a lift). He ran from the police, under the pretext that he needed aid from his wife and two small children, and to call his brother (if the brother wouldn't even give him a lift home from jail, he surely wouldn't try to stop the arrest!). Bollyn said armed men had put him into an unmarked car, but he somehow ended up in a squad car. He was pictured grinning alongside Lt Russo, more in the manner of two conniving pals rather than arch-enemies. There are too many inconsistencies.
Mike Piper said on his show that there had been problems with Bollyn for months prior to the firing in October. Piper claimed to have been sticking up for his "friend" throughout this time when American Free Press wanted to get rid of him. Unfortunately, I find Piper's view of events to be more credible than Bollyn's. Bollyn was fired because AFP could not trust the accuracy of his reports, and it was not economical for them to have to verify every source and fact. There was also doubt over his loyalty. I have the same problem with Bollyn, since I do not trust him. This does not mean that his work has been rendered useless, but readers should beware of deliberate errors that can be used against us.
Piper names lots of names in his books, e.g. Rupert Murdoch, Edgar Bronfman, Lord Jacob Rothschild, William & Irving Kristol, Richard Perle, Frank Gaffney, Michael Ledeen, Elliott Abrams, John Lehman, William Bennett, Gary Bauer, Bernard Lewis, Charles Krauthammer, George Will, John McCain, Joe Lieberman, Mort Zuckerman, James Angleton, Tibor Rosenbaum, Louis Bloomfield, Martin Peretz, Eliot Cohen, Robert Kagan, Natan Sharansky, etc. There is a lot about Zionist power and influence. The sheer quantity of information belies the idea that Piper is a Zionist agent, but Bollyn says Piper has a gay lover named Phil who is his handler at the ADL.
Bollyn's work has appeal, since he focuses on 9/11 and acknowledges that the Zionists did it. But I find you have to take what he says with a large pinch of salt.

One way to understand the effect of 9/11, in most general terms, is to see that it allowed the agenda developed in the 1990s by neoconservatives - often called simply “neocons” — to be implemented. There is agreement on this point across the political spectrum. From the right, for example, Stefan Halper and Jonathan Clarke say that 9/11 allowed the “preexisting ideological agenda” of the neoconservatives to be “taken off the shelf . . . and relabeled as the response to terror.”1 Stephen Sniegoski, writing from the left, says that “it was only the traumatic effects of the 9/11 terrorism that enabled the agenda of the neocons to become the policy of the United States of America.”2
What was this agenda?
