Pentagon official canned over Gitmo remarks
I told you he was in for a whuppin'!
Not only did he make the Pentagon look bad, but also he criticized Big Law firms - each a capital offense in its own right.
Notwithstanding their high profile, pro bono representation of a few hapless prisoners for PR purposes, NOBODY is closer to Big Corporations than Big Law Firms!
Not that I think that they shouldn't represent them - they should - I merely question the firms' motives (not those of the individual attorneys).
Anyway, Stimson must have been out of his mind to think that he has more clout with Big Corporations than Big Law Firms do.
The Pentagon official who criticized law firms for defending detainees held at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, has resigned due to the backlash over his remarks, a Defense Department spokesman said on Friday.
Charles "Cully" Stimson, deputy assistant secretary for detainee affairs, last month called it "shocking" that major U.S. law firms represented Guantanamo detainees for free and said they would likely suffer financially after their corporate clients learned of the work.
"He made the decision based on the current controversy," Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman told reporters. "He believed it hampered his ability to be effective in this position."
He was canned!
Thrown to the wolves.
Fed to the sharks.
Sacrificed on the PR alter.
Not that I care. But, hey, we need to be clear on who deserves blame here - not this schlep, who doesn't know his PR ass from his elbow, but the corporations who are driving our foreign policy and the big law firms that help them do it.
Stimson, himself a lawyer, submitted his resignation on Thursday and his last day in the position would be Friday, Whitman said, stressing Defense Secretary Robert Gates did not ask him to resign.
The Pentagon disavowed his remarks and Stimson apologized, saying he supported pro bono work and that the legal system worked best when both sides had competent representation.
You see, it's all a cruel game of charade and you ruin it if you don't pretend to play by the 'rules'.

"It's all a cruel game of charade, and you ruin it if you don't play by the 'rules'."
On a side note, this is why I believe Avigdor Lieberman will (sooner or later) be purged from his new post in the Israeli Knesset, despite his popularity.
Lieberman expresses what Zionists think, but he does it OPENLY, which violates the rules of the charade. It's okay to slaughter and pillage, but you can't publicly state that you want to slaughter and pillage.
+++++++
Speaking of "Lieberman," Joe Lieberman in the USA wants a new "war on terror tax."
This will be in addition to the $245 billion that Bush (on Monday) demanded in order to keep his wars going in Iraq and Afghanistan. Bush's latest demand will raise the official costs of the wars to $661.9 billion. His fiscal 2008 budget includes another $50 billion for the wars in 2009. Since none of these costs are included in Bush's budget, Bush claims he will "reduce the deficit." :-)
Meanwhile Joe Lieberman says Americans are not sacrificing enough for their security.
