When did the shooting death of a two-week old baby stop being headline news?

At least eight people have been killed and 35 more wounded in a shootout at a Jewish school in west Jerusalem.

Agencies quoted witnesses as saying that two armed men entered the yeshiva, or religious school, and opened fire on Thursday.

The seminary is located in the Kyriat Moshe neighbourhood.

According to witnesses, the armed men entered a dining hall where about 80 people were gathered, and opened fire.

The school is a well-known centre of Jewish studies linked with those leading the Jewish settler movement in the occupied West Bank.

There has been no claim of responsibility.

Security lapse

Al Jazeera's Ayman Mohyeldin, reporting from the scene, said that questions will be raised as to how the assailants passed through the many security checks situated in the area.

"There are numerous checkpoints throughout the city," he said.

"The deaths will ultimately raise many questions regarding the apparent lapse in surveillance around the school."

Marwan Bishara, Al Jazeera's senior political analyst, said that the attack is a major escalation, and points to a premeditated attack from the Palestinian territories.

'Carefully planned'

"The shootout displays a carefully planned operation, and it would be no surprise if the Israeli government uses this as another pretext to launch further assaults on the Palestinian population," Bishara said.

Shmuel Ben Ruby, Jerusalem police spokesman, said: "One or two terrorists infiltrated the Mercaz Harav seminary and opened fire in all directions.

"One terrorist was killed in an exchange of fire, and apparently he had an explosives belt."

In the Gaza Strip, people fired in the air to celebrate the attack, which occurred three days after Israel ended a military offensive in the Hamas-run territory that killed at least 120 people.

Scores die in twin Baghdad blasts

At least 54 people have been killed in a roadside bombing and a suicide attack within minutes of each other in Baghdad, according to police and medical officials.

Major-General Qassim Moussawi, spokesman for security operations in the Iraqi capital, said the blasts occurred in a shopping area in Karrada district, wounding another 120 people.

"First a roadside bomb went off and as people and police gathered to rescue the victims, a suicide bomber blew himself up amid the crowd," a security official said.

The victims were taken to five different hospitals in Baghdad.

Witnesses said wounded people were crying for help and people were trying to flee the scene.

Police pickups and ambulances arrived at the scene to pick the casualties.

Dozens of shopfronts and cars were damaged in the explosion, witnesses said.

On Monday, two bomb blasts in central and eastern Baghdad killed 19 people, despite an increase in security for the visit of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Iranian president.

Violence in the capital has dropped significantly in recent months and the US military announced on Thursday that it was to withdraw about 2,000 troops from Baghdad.

Lieutenant-Colonel Steve Stover, US military spokesman, said that the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, which has been based in northeast Baghdad, would not be replaced after it completed its 15-month tour of duty.

He told the Reuters news agency that there were about 34,500 troops operating in the Iraqi capital out of the total force of more than 155,000 across the country.
