They have done the same thing to President Clinton preceding Monica Lewinsky scandal and former New Jersey governor Jim McGreevey.

Update for clarification: Eliot Spitzer is descended from Austrian Jew parents. He was a well-known prosecutor of white collar crimes (including going after organized crime) in Manhattan D.A.'s office and Attorney General before governorship. 60 Minutes profiled Mr. Spitzer as "Sheriff of Wall Street" in 2003. Time magazine profiled him in a 2002 article "Wall Street's Top Cop"

If you aren't from NY one of the things you might miss about this story is just how spectacularly Spitzer failed as Governor. He was elected with the highest percentage of the vote in NY history - 75%. He ran a brilliant election campaign, very similar in tone to the one Obama is running now. His slogan was "Change from day one". Coming into office he had a powerful mandate, popular support and was considered untouchable in the press.
Right off the bat he went after Republican State Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno. Bruno made his fortunes in the telecoms industry and then chairing all the committees that could use new phone systems like hospitals, airports, education etc... At the time there were no ethic laws concerning this behavior so when he had all his deals locked in he sponsored ethics legislation. Bruno has been under numerous federal and state investigations on alleged corruption.
Bruno is a bully and has a huge pulpit to bully from so right off the bat he and Spitzer clashed. Instead of going after Bruno legally, Spitzer used the State Police to basically spy on the guy. Spitzer survived as Governor after the scandal but Bruno had beaten the shit of him in the press.
Almost immediately after the scandal, Spitzer sponsored drivers licenses for illegal immigrants. There was an overwhelming public opposition to this plan. It even made the national news thanks to guys like Lou Dobbs and such. The plan was not only opposed by the public but it was overly complex and disapproved by the feds. Spitzer blew every bit of the political capital he had and kept fighting for this plan, the true purpose of which I believe was to break up the trucker's and garbage collection unions because you can't drive those without a license. By the time it was over his approval ratings were dipping near 25% and headed lower.
He also planned to tax Internet sales from sites like Amazon and planned to tax illegal drugs like pot and cocaine after seizure. He also had some shady real estate deals in NYC. As well he was also recently being whispered about as possibly getting copies of sealed grand jury testimony he should not have had access to.
I bought into Spitzer and voted for him, but he was a lame duck from the start and has been nothing but a disappointment in my eyes. He was arrogant and thought himself above the law. He blew all his political capital and achieved nothing despite having the greatest mandate from the voters in the state's history. As AG he did some great things cleaning up corporate malfeasance in NY, but even back then many complained of his dirty tactics in the prosecution, like mentioning people's mistresses and such.
And of course sending people to jail during his cleaning up of prostitution. So to be caught with a prostitute he can't declare it a victimless crime and give the usual 'it's a personal matter' excuse.
And finally he drug his wife up on stage as a prop while he gave his speech admitting he was guilty.
It's not a republican/democrat issue. The guy is the epitome of the old phrase "power corrupts".

If I had to hazard a guess from afar I'd say they branded him a moser over this - investigating the swindlers in the holohoax shoah reparations scheme.
But he had plenty of high powered financial enemies who would love to have his head on a pike.
