Since he commanded the entire Mideast theater of operations and was publicly opposed to the President's plans to attack Iran, I can only draw one conclusion.
He was ordered to prepare for an attack on Iran and resigned instead of carrying out the order.
The Federal Reserve suddenly injects 200 billion into the credit markets, swapping AAA Treasury notes for junk mortgage backed bonds. This would be an essential move in preparation for the market decline that would result from a new military adventure, especially against a major oil producer.
Oil futures have been rising dramatically over the past 5 trading days. People "in the know" could be buying oil futures will every penny they can get their hands on with the intention of making a fortune when an attack occurs. Which faction would have access war plans and take monetary advantage of that information?
I know the answer: The ruling Elite plutocrat-oligarchs with the stake in their holdings comprised of bonds, precious metals, etc and Zionists in Tel Aviv, Washington & New York and at the Pentagon (Office of Special Plans).
These things seem to point in only one direction—Iran.

Rest easy Nepos. The U.S. is not going to attack Iran in the near future, at least not between now the end of the w. bush administration (barring some dramatic staged provocation by the USA).
The U.S. ground forces are worn out and stretched very thin in Iraq and Afghanistan. An attack on Iran would invite the Iranians to step up weapons deliveries and guerrilla activity in both theaters, including infiltration of Iranian Kommando units into both countries.
If the Iranians made a full commitment to harassing U.S. forces in the region they could create quite a bit of mischief. The U.S. war planners understand that, and they understand they're not in a position to invite an accelerated ground war against fresh troops and increased weapons shipments. The benefits of the U.S. "surge" are beginning to disintegrate now, and that faltering "surge" is confined to fighting with local Iraqi militias. Confronting fresh Iranian troops, probably Kommando units and increased arms shipments would put a severe strain on American ground forces. The majority of U.S. combat ground forces are either in Iraq, in Afghanistan or on R and R today.
Fallon was dumped because he was providing comfort to the Iranians. He was keeping the rhetoric low key and signalling the Iranians to behave themselves and there wouldn't be any war, regardless of cheney's and w. bush's threats. The Pentagon staff realises it can't really pick a fight with Iran given the military situation in Iraq and Afghanistan, and cheny's and w. bush's only real option is threats and intimidation toward Iran. Fallon was interfering with that so they got rid of him.

Maybe that might be true that the WH war mongers won't attack Iran between now and when Bushco leaves office.
But that would be the actions of a sane and rational president.
And GW and "Big Dick" are anything but sane and rational.
The potential actions of an insane commander in chief can never be completely dismissed, that's true. But there's a recognition amongst the Pentagon staff and military professionals, in addition to Fallon, that the idea of an attack on Iran is more difficult to justify with each passing day:
The betting inside the Pentagon is that despite Fallon's departure, war with Iran is no more likely next month than it was last month. The U.S. military, its hands full in Iraq and Afghanistan, could only engage in an air war against Iran's nuclear sites. The ramifications of attacking a third Muslim nation since 9/11 are so extreme, military officers believe, that no president would launch such a war in his final months in office.
This is an additional point. It may seem insignificant but things like this are taken into consideration by the Establishment elites: w. bush's daughter is getting married on 10 May. It's highly unlikely he would do anything dramatic that would attract a lot of bad publicity to spoil the fun and celebration at that event.
FWIW, If cheney and w. bush insisted that an attack plan be put into action there's a good chance the misson would be leaked to the press due to the unpopularity of the idea at the Pentagon. The Russian and Chinese elint departments are monitoring U.S. military traffic and movements very closely right now. So are the Iranians. If it looked like a plan was in the works there's a good chance it would become very public before it was implemented.
In my opinion an attack on Iran while w. bush is in office, or at least through 2008 is not going to happen.
