1963 Roget's Thesaurus

One day, i came across this book, and thought that surely there'd be no reference to holocaust, since it was first printed in 1946, but it seems i was wrong, there was ONE.

This book is indexed in a really weird way, and was bought in 1963 for 35 cents. (it also has a glossary, whew!)

I have straightened the pictures and sharpened some previews; note that only one page is in the preview; click to see both.

Let me know when you're interested in any of the other contents, and i'll post 'em. Click for Closeup =)

It's interesting to see that on page 304, the word Holocaust™ is sandwiched between the words Idolatry and Golden Calf.

Coinicidence?

the word "holocaust" (with a small "h")is listed as a form of idolatry, followed by the 'golden calf' as an example of the word "idol."

This is an AMAZING catch!!! BRAVO!!!

Check for hussar under combatant. (next page)

I have no idea about pocketbooks inc;
notice the Rockerfeller Center on the back?

I scanned half the book, for another reason;
some might be relevant here.

I have a 1986 'Little Oxford' dictionary
(sixth edition; first was 1930)
that has a very simple definition of
holocaust: n. wholesale destruction. (that's it!)

Should scan some of my Casell's World Pictoral Gazetter.
It's a tome of about 1000 pages; not dated, but it must be from 1931 because the latest population counts are from then.

It's a book that reads like an atlas,
and the map of Palestine includes Lebanon
Of course, israel is nowhere to be found.(&!

"It is easy to forget that before 1967 Jewish life here did not focus on Israel or the Holocaust. In the early 1960s, the concerns and values of Jews were virtually identical to those of their gentile neighbors. Jews in the United States had gained a level of social acceptance and security never before achieved anywhere else in the Jewish Diaspora.

Then came the Six Day War of 1967. Millions of U.S. Jews felt, far more strongly than before, that Israel's fate symbolized their own fate and the fate of Jews all over the world. Virtually all Jews claimed that Israel's very existence was threatened (though some historians now question this claim). Generally, dictionaries published before 1950, and contemporary updates of such dictionaries, do not indicate the frequency of use of different meanings of a word.

However, two American dictionaries, one published in 1927 and the other in 1947, do indicate that the most frequently used meaning of "holocaust" is "great destruction of life" or "destructive fire," and not, as Garber and Zuckerman claim, "sacrifice" and "burnt offering." (12)

A third dictionary, the Thorndike Century Junior Dictionary of 1942, which claims that its definitions derive from an examination of word usage in an extensive sampling of texts, gives no indication that "holocaust" has any religious meaning whatsoever:

"holocaust: 1) complete destruction by fire, especially of animals or human beings,

2) great or wholesale destruction."

And my Jerusalem printed 1958 Oxford English-Readers Dictionary gives as its only meaning of "holocaust": "A large scale destruction, esp. of human lives."

But why?  If the holocaust was so terrible, such a tragedy, why would the jews prefer to forget about it?  Why such a change from wanting to forget to "never forget"?
