Here's a Housing Crisis for You

The military court justification for house demolitions has an interesting history.
  • In the 1960s, the military could demolish the house of a militant who had caused damage.
  • In the 1970s, they could demolish the house of one whose actions had the intention of causing damage even if they had not been successful.
  • By the 1980s, the military allowed itself to demolish the house of anyone who had thrown a Molotov cocktail.
  • And then in 1988, the military decided it had the right to demolish the house of anyone throwing stones.
  • Then, that too, was amended to include those who had thrown stones even if they had done no damage.
  • And finally, the law allowed for the demolition of the houses of “suspected stone-throwers”.
