The Ralph Nader reality show? Parsing racial comments; Triumph vs. Nader
Tim Goodman: The Bastard Machine
No doubt some savvy TV executive has already thought this up, especially after Ralph Nader extinquished the relevancy of his political career with his offensive racial comments about Barack Obama on the very night Obama won the election and Nader won, well, nothing, as usual: A Ralph Nader reality show. Seriously, someone needs to put a camera on Nader 24/7. He's the epitome of what fuels a reality series: A character without a filter between his head and his mouth and the willingness to say just about anything while being completely oblivious to the fallout. If Nader doesn't have a development deal in 48 hours, someone missed a golden opportunity.
As to Nader supporters parsing what he said and what he meant with the "Uncle Tom" comment, let's not waste a lot of time and ranting comments on whether that's an offensive term or not. Why not field test it yourself? Go to a bar (around midnight, shall we say?) filled only with African Americans. Use the term "Uncle Tom" any way you'd like and see how that works out for you.
Nader has already been on record as saying Obama tries to "talk white." Here's his quote in the Rocky Mountain News: "There's only one thing different about Barack Obama when it comes to being a Democratic presidential candidate. He's half African-American," Nader said. "Whether that will make any difference, I don't know. I haven't heard him have a strong crackdown on economic exploitation in the ghettos. Payday loans, predatory lending, asbestos, lead. What's keeping him from doing that? Is it because he wants to talk white? He doesn't want to appear like Jesse Jackson? We'll see all that play out in the next few months and if he gets elected afterwards."
Well, looks like he got elected, Ralphie. Probably because he didn't do any interviews with Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, as Nader did here on "Late Night with Conan O'Brien." I could watch this over and over again. But alas, it's back to something that's relevant - television. I promise, no more free publicity for Nader. That is, unless he ends up on "Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?"

Nader is an anti-Zionist, unlike Obama and his IDF-serving, Israeli passport-carrying chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, and would've been a much better president.
For Nader to use a pejorative term like Uncle Tom when talking about Obama showed very poor judgement on his part.
He could've said what he wanted to say about Obama without resorting to that term.
By using that term, Nader conveniently handed the right wing spin machine a club that they will use against him anytime he tries to enter another political race, beating him back into obscurity with his own words.
Nader had been given the nickname of "St. Ralph" in the past, but his screw up on FOX is what people will remember, not the good he's done in the past exposing corporate malfeasance.
Ditto for any future attempts by Nader to expose political skullduggery, since his use of that term will forever haunt Ralph.
I thought Nader was a smart and savvy operator that I've voted for in the past.
Too bad Ralph has written his own epitaph.
H GB, think you're right that a lot of assholes will use his comments to smear him. However, I cut him some slack and figure he's tired and pissed off - watching the nation go gaga over Obama. A pathetic sight and he spoke bluntly and undiplomatically. A mistake but fuck it.
Rahm Fucking Emmanuel right out of the shoot. Disgusting and ass licking to make AIPAC proud.
Obviously, since I used the term myself. I don't think it's so bad.
Ralph said it and continues to say it like it is.
I don't know why he bothers engaging in entertainment skits that revolve around his own humiliation. Although I admit, it is pretty funny.
Anyway, getting back to the uncle tom comment. Yes, Obama deserved it and no I don't think it's racist.
I know I'm not racist and I didn't think twice about saying it. If a black man said it, no one would accuse him of racism.
I can easily picture Malcolm X make the same remark.
If the shoe fits...

"Money" has no value - people do.
I think is because often the candidates tend to make asses of themselves. Like Nader here or Gravel & his kooky videos. They don't handle themselves as professionally. Even looking at the two major candidates, I think part of the reason McCain lost may have been his behavior in the debates, making faces & rolling his eyes & shit. While Obama stayed calm & collected. In a way getting elected almost seems like trying to pick up women, I think Chris Rock made a joke about that once in regards to Clinton.
He is speaking as a non-white : as an ethnically self-aware Arab-American..
Is going to have to suck the muzzle of the 'Uncle Tom' shotgun SEVERAL times before this one hits the fan for true.
First you take D.C. Then you take New York
“This ... wave (that) Obama is riding, (is an) ... ocean of energy he is trying to steer into an acceptance of the same old deal, the same old wars, the same old systemic racism, packaged as something new. This wave of energy is not something he’s inspired, it’s something he’s riding and that he is uniquely qualified to channel toward his own ends --- which are not our ends.”
--Juan Santos, February, 2008
We all better get used to hearing that phrase because Black America is going to be using it alot.
Like Fester says the appointment of Rahm_bo really irks and stings and some of the wavering allocations of the benefit of oubt to Obama is slipping to way side sent asunder on an Israeli missile hitting the broad side of a Palestinian home in the West Bank in the middle of the night waking the children in tears and shrieks of daddy, mamy.
Yes still, Obama has proven that he's not an uncle tom. Just let your fingers do the walking and look up his self-less work as a community organizer. Obama could have made it big time in corporate America but chose to side with the poor.
Although, people are free to disagree with his method of trying to agitate from within instead of throwing molitov cocktails at the edifice however, it's ok to attack the juggernaut from all directions and highly recommended. Even Gandhi had a complementary military wing that helped the British see the light. It's not an either or situation.
All we can say at this juncture is that it is yet to be seen. Even though, I applaud Nader for having the cohones to go against the grain in the sense that while the entire nation, the world really, was attributing the Obama landslide as this colossal step forward for African-Americans and that the nation has somehow moved decades ahead socially and intellectually when in actuality, Obama's win is mostly the story of one African American, Barack Husein Obama--Nader could have chosen a better timing to make his uncle tom statement. Yes symbolism belongs to the many but only one person personifies the icon. I think the brunt of the outrage is with the timing more than the opinion itself--but the term may be considered offensive by some. President-elect Obama can ably answer for himself on those accounts--if Nader were to put the question to him.
Even McCain made a gracious speech to that effect and so did President Bush and hundreds of talking heads in the media. But going back to the uncle tom remark by Nader, I guess it's opinion and I cannot forbid him the right to express himself. Nevertheless, if he suffers politically, for his faux pas, then he is responsible for providing the ammunition to his enemies.
But I must caution that the fight against racism includes and inheres allowing people to be human and make mistakes. Nader's remarks were questionable indeed, but his body of work, his work against racism, sexism, classism and capitalism in general must provide him some shelter in this hour of need. I am willing to avail this to Mr. Nader, are you?
