Until now, private organizations like the Claims Conference have stolen "holocaust reparations" from the people of Europe. Now the Israeli government wants to get in on the bonanza.

Minister Rafi Eitan will propose a survey of property to be seized in Poland. He will also propose that Israel establish a corporation to handle claims.

Eitan’s first target will be the Polish government.

Polish Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski met with representatives of Jewish organizations. He said that by the end of 2007, a compensation law would be on the books. The Israeli and American ambassadors were present at the meeting with Prime Minister Kaczynski.

Eitan says the Israeli government and the Claims Conference will jointly own the corporation that will seize Polish assets.

Germany, Austria, France and most of western and central European countries have already made arrangements to pay the growing list of "holocaust survivors," while Eastern Europe has gotten away with paying nothing. Poland is the most important country in this respect. Figures presented to the ministerial committee on Jewish property matters estimate that Polish citizens should surrender assets worth $30 billion to $40 billion to holocaust survivors.

Private groups dealing with the restitution of Jewish property have reacted skeptically to Eitan's initiative. (Because they’re pocketing a lot of money, and don’t want the Israeli government involved. –AZ)
